W…W…W…Wednesday

I’ll tell you mine and you tell me yours. Thanks to Miz B at Should Be Reading for hosting.

I’d love to know what everyone is reading.  To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…(or post a link to your blog.)

• What are you currently reading? • What did you recently finish reading? • What do you think you’ll read next?

Death Comes to PemberlyWhat are you currently reading? Today I will start my book club book for this month. I’m not too excited about reading Death Comes to Pemberly. Actually, I’m not excited about reading P.D. James. I was not a fan of An Unsuitable Job for a Woman, another Book Club pick. I have been told that this one is very different so I’m trying to keep an open mind. I have to remind myself that book club expands my reading horizons and selections.

China Dolls

What did you recently finish reading? Just finished China Dolls by Lisa See and I’m contemplating my review. My initial reaction is one of frustration because it didn’t live up to my personal Lisa See standards, but I enjoyed reading it. Loved the WWII time period and learning about the Chinese nightclub scene. She creates such wonderful atmospheres for her books. The problem is that I didn’t like the characters. I kept waiting to like them, but it didn’t happen.

We Are Called to RiseWhat do you think you’ll read next? I don’t have anything on hold at the library or waiting on my shelf so I’m in the happy position of being able to peruse the shelves. I do have some titles at the top of my To-Read, including We Are Called to Rise, which has gotten under my skin so I’m hoping to get into that soon.

How about you?

What are your W…W…W… titles?

  1. I am always very ambivalent towards modern day adaptations of Jane Austen’s novels because they never get the sarcasm and wit right! I have so many books waiting for me on Netgalley that I’ll be set for the rest of the year! Looks like some great books!

    • I have to admit I’m not any sort of Austen expert. I must be missing that particular reading gene. I wonder if that’s going to make Pemberly even more of a chore…Maybe I should do a crash course in Pride or Prejudice before I start.

  2. I really like Lisa See. It’s a shame that it didn’t meet your expectations. I find I have such high expectations for my favourite authors.

    • Thanks for dropping by. Occasional disappointment is the flip side of loving their work I think. I still think readers will enjoy this novel; it just wasn’t everything I wanted it to be.

  3. I haven’t read Death Comes To Pemberly because I’d heard it was unlike her earlier books, which I did enjoy, so maybe it will work for you? I’m going to be looking out for your review of China Dolls as the subject sounds completely fascinating.

  4. Great picks! I love Lisa See but haven’t read this one yet, really enjoy her writing though. I haven’t read Death Comes to Pemberley yet but it is on my very large TBR pile!

  5. Currently splitting my time between Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and The Quick by Lauren Owen. Just finished reading Elizabeth is Missing by Emma Healey and I’m trying to get my thoughts together on that one. I don’t know what I’m going to read next! Maybe a trip to the library is in my future!

I’m curious what you will think of Death Comes to Pemberley. I remember it being OK for me – definitely not the worst Austen adaptation but you know, still an Austen adaptation…

    • And you know me…ill prepared for any Austen interpretation. I guess I’ll be judging the book on its own merits aside from Austen.
Just returned from the library where I grabbed one title from my TBR and one random shelf pick. We’ll see.
